TL;DR:
There is a new cool Tobii EyeX 2.0 available for download, with “touch where you look” features in Windows 10. Right Ctrl will no longer click what you are looking at – hook your own keys in your game or app to use with the Activatable and Pannable behaviors.

We are excited to announce that Tobii EyeX 2.0 is available for download from the Tobii Developer Zone.

With Tobii EyeX 2.0 we have shifted our focus to Windows 10 and in particular touchpad interactions: touch where you look! You are going to notice that the EyeX software and menus have gotten a face lift and are now eye-gaze enabled. The new Tray Icon Panel gives fast access to EyeX Games and Apps, as well as a nifty little feature called Gaze Trace. While the out-of-the-box features are now mainly available on Windows 10 only, you will still have full compatibility for EyeX-enabled games and apps on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

This release comes with some changes to the Tobii EyeX Engine as well. The new EyeX Engine 1.8.0 removes the global hooking of a keyboard key for the EyeX Button. We do this because our beta tests have clearly indicated that this was only used by a fraction of developers, and we want to put our efforts on what helps you as developers the most. Right now we are mainly focused on growing the EyeX gaming eco system and the EyeX data streams. There is no doubt that complementing eye gaze interaction with a secondary input such as the keyboard is still important. Tobii EyeX provides this by using touchpad, or listening to key input that make sense in the context you’re in (e.g. Enter key to click what you look at in the Tobii EyeX menus).

You can still use key input for direct click and panning in your own application or game. It is easily done by setting up your own key hook and sending Activate and Pan commands to EyeX Engine as keys are pressed and released. To make this change easy for you we are providing an updated Tobii EyeX SDK 1.6 with samples that use client side key hooking with the Activatable and Pannable EyeX behaviors. More detailed information is available in the EyeX Developer Guide.

The new software versions:

  • Tobii EyeX software bundle 2.0.2
  • Tobii EyeX Engine 1.8.0
  • Tobii EyeX SDK 1.6

You can find and download the latest Tobii EyeX software and SDK’s on the Downloads page. As always, let us know what you think of Tobii EyeX and how the APIs work!
