Adapted our game Totem Topple to use EyeX. It’s a tower defence game where you literally have one tower in the form of a totem pole. You stack up heads on your totem pole and add armour and turrets to the side (in the form of wings and arrow firing bird beaks respectively). Enemies spawn and try to eat away at the base of your tower. The aim of the game is to add as many totem heads as possible before the tower is totally destroyed.

Normally the turrets in the game just shoot sideways, but in the version we made to use EyeX, you can actually aim them to target specific enemies. You look at the enemy you want to target and tap Ctrl on keyboard. (In some cases you might need to tap it a couple of times for it to lock on, so generally, it works best to just spam Ctrl till you start seeing arrows firing at the enemy you want).

You can also use Tab on keyboard to toggle the target sights on and off. I personally prefer to play with them off.

Otherwise use mouse to click on totem heads and add them to your totem pole, or to navigate menus and tutorial.

The game was originally made for Wii U, and we’re still in the process of porting it to PC, so some icons, naming of buttons etc might be still for the Wii U version. Equally some resolutions might be a problem. We’ve tested 1920×1080 and 1280x720p and both of those are fine. Also the in-game help doesn’t quite work properly and the button for closing help is missing (press Y on keyboard or number pad 3 to toggle help on/off).

Finally, Classic mode works a lot better with eye tracking than frantic mode, since in the latter, things go a bit too fast for enemy targeting to ever be really useful.

You can download it from itch.io here:

Please don’t distribute it or talk about it beyond these forums without asking though, as it’s still very much a work in progress.

Let me know also if you have any problems playing or getting it to work with EyeX

Hey, that was fun! I kept frantically hitting the control key 🙂 Keep up the good work!

Glad you liked it! Just posted an updated version here: http://crystalline-green-ltd.itch.io/totem-topple?secret=zcTPQsFQrxNAALmwZrR6DaedLgc

This version has improvements to the UI: Fixed the help section, made button text look a bit better when the Wii U buttons aren’t showing, and should now work at most standard resolutions. Plus changed some text in the tutorial to remove references to Wii U.

It has a bug where it doesn’t always pick up the eye tracker. To get round it at the moment, you need to minimise the game then bring it back to the front for the eye tracking to work. You’ll see the white target reticule on the main menu if eye tracking is working. Not sure why this bug keeps coming up. Probably something to do with Unity, as it’s happened before in the past, then disappeared again later for reasons I don’t understand.

Was thinking we might get rid of frantic mode for the eye-tracker version and instead have a survival mode (as a modified version of classic mode). Also looking into adding a leaderboard.

Otherwise, feel free to share around this build. Comments, feedback and criticism welcome. Also, would like to put the game on your store once the above is fixed, but not sure how to go about doing that?

    Hey James,

Really cool game and you are right with the bug about not always picking up the eye tracker. We are also interested in getting it on the app store and we will get back to you real soon about the process! Truly enjoyed it.
